Ahhh, good question. [First, I’ll take modest bows for the awful pun.]
A chicken tractor is a portable, bottomless chicken coop. You let the chickens scratch and fertilize and eat weed seeds in one spot, than move them to another; lather, rinse, repeat. The solid green area behind this modest flock is the night-safe part of the coop.
Usually the front end of the coop is on wheels and the back has handles, as this one does—it’s like a wheelbarrow. Kate probably remembers the elegant wicker chicken tractor from the permaculture joint in Point Reyes Station, back when they were running a B&B;.
I also love it when the restoration folks and the permaculture/organic/smart farming folks are the same folks. Cross-fertilize, everybody!
