Yes.

I kept reading the rumors spilling around the bird lists and thinking no, it’s a hoax, it’s got to be a hoax.

 

Then I read the first apparently credible report. I cried.

 

Then I saw the video, the sketches by Gallagher and Harrison.

 

I cried a bit more. This is not like seeing Elvis—just hearing about it is WAY better.

One hard-ass old birder I know—“hard-ass” meaning he has a permit to shoot birds for field study—said he’d wept when he heard, too.

It’s funny, and I must be getting old. My first impulse is to ask whether I dare get excited about it, or is it one more rug to be pulled out from under us. But I’m excited; it’s involuntary as breathing, no matter what my cautious demons say.
