Odds

Today’s quotes from Teresa Nielsen Hayden:

It must be nice to live in a world where you not only expect to win all the time, but believe everyone has a duty to make nice to you while you’re doing it.

Sound aesthetic judgement has never been one of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. If it were, there wouldn’t be an entire Precious Moments Chapel at the Precious Moments Inspirational Park in Carthage, [Missouri].

Then again, I sincerely doubt that any holy spirit has anything to do with the Precious Moments Abomination. That mess squicked out even my devout sentimental Southern 98-year-old (when she mentioned the place to Joe) mother-in-law.

Also, another seasonal marker: I saw two spotted sandpipers today, flying close together over the lagoon at Shelter Bay in Mill Valley, Marin County.

I have to remember that one. (Just what ARE the gifts of the Holy Spirit? Does he/she/it have an approved list from which s/he/it chooses?)

oh my dear.  i had no idea—although, naturally something as awesome as precious moments would have its own chapel.

seasonal markers:  daughter departs for corvallis at 7 a.m.  so far, she has tossed clothes in a suitcase until it was full, and tossed bedding in 2 hefty bags.  since she plans to take a carload, that’s not great progress.  maybe the spirit will move her to remember the chargers, the coat and boots, the desk lamp, the alarm clock.

Wisdom, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, understanding, piety, and fear of the Lord. Thus saith the Baltimore Catechism, anyway.

You know how some people used to have a favorite Beatle? The Holy Spirit was my favorite member of the Trinity.

Which gift registry did the Holy Spirit choose, anyway?  Linens ‘n’ Things?

Hah. We’re supposed to get those gifts when we’re confirmed, along with that slap upside the head by the bishop. Now if they’d included music lessons, braces, and a long course with a dermatologist, my life would’ve been a lot less awful back then. Well, I still regret the music lessons and I’m pretty sure I no longer have the reflexes to pick up playing. Guess I’ll stick to being a passionate listener.

Social skills. Social skills would be useful too. Hmm, what would be the ideal Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the real world? Confirmation happens at about the onset of adolescence, so it’s certainly a ripe occasion.

Gifts of a Holy Spirit . . . hmmmm . . .

1. Knowledge that everyone is afraid, with the accompanying recognition that that should not guide one’s actions, even as it sometimes explains someone’s behavior.

2. Recognition that the pleasures of the flesh are, indeed, pleasures, and that, even if one believes in a deity, the notion that the deity would endow one with such pleasures but instruct one to not use them is perverse, at best.

3. The wisdom to say no (and yes) at the right times, to the right people.

4. The recognition that all people are people, regardless of the particular arrangement of their bits of flesh.

5. The ability to recognize when one has made a mistake and to acknowledge that, apologize, fix it if possible, and LEARN from it, without thinking one has now become a Bad Person.

I might maybe have more, but those five would be a good start.  IMHO.

Incidentally, I am amused that wisdom and knowledge are distinguished from each other and both are included.

Yeah, and counsel too.

I’m thinking perfect pitch, balance, coordination, and good taste in men ought to be in there too. Also a sense of direction. And clear sinuses.

Why just “good taste in men”?  Or do people attracted to women get no gifts from THS?

I would add in the ability to speak only when one should… something I certainly don’t have.  How about the ability to understand each other?  Words that mean only one thing would be good, too.

How about making it impossible to put code live when it doesn’t work?

No, wait, I know what we need: no more insomnia!
