Recognition

I’m nuts about Rebecca Solnit’s work. Nuts in a way that’s equal parts Damn, I wish I’d written that and Woo-hoo! More! More! and AAAhhhhhhhh. Lots of what I enjoy is a matter of recognition: Yeah, you bet, that’s what happens.

This is a perfect example. Though I’ve never personally been to anyone’s Rocky Mountain lodge, of course.

Thank you!  Having spent most of my life in male-dominated fields, I thought I was going to sprain my neck from nodding.

I only wish I could get more people to read this!  I sent the link to my sister and nieces, as well as to a young friend of mine who is a little TOO polite, IMO.  This is exactly what I meant when I told someone (male) “I do NOT nod and smile!”.

OTOH, one has to pick confrontations carefully, especially in the workplace.  There was a walking HR incident at my last job who used to make me furious.  Nothing could dent that smugness and any objections to his behavior made him act like you’d proved his point.  Argh!  So I started donating money to womens groups whenever he pissed me off…

BDL, you bet, absolutely everything she has ever written. I had to read Hope in the Dark in small pieces because I was in a state I get into sometimes that really really makes me dislike anything the least bit flavored with “uplift.” More than usual, I mean. Maybe it’s just that I’m older and tireder than Solnit. For all that, it’s a terrific book.

VS, good move. And you’re right about work. I got email from another regular here with similar stories, if anything, they had more impact outside her workplace. They really hate it when we’re right.

Oh—credit where due: I nabbed that link off Echidne of the Snakes. I think she’s over there on my blogroll. One of my two or three bastions of sanity, aside from being a snake goddess of course. I had that link in the first time I made the post, but hit the wrong button somewhere and dissolved the whole thing. And then, it being late and sleepy out, I shut down and went to bed.
